Anniversary of the Hannah Jumper "Hatchet Raids", 1950s

July 8 marked the anniversary of the "Hatchet Gang" raids in Rockport, MA. The town held a commemorative event to acknowledge this iconic day in Rockport history.

Hannah Jumper was a primary organizer of a Rockport, Massachusetts, temperance group. After months of planning in 1856, 75-year-old Jumper and her "Hatchet Gang" raided Rockport establishments that sold legal and illegal spirits. As a result of the raids, Rockport became a dry town until a voter referendum in 2005.
